Review: Wishing for Someday Soon by Tiffany King

Wishing For Someday Soon
Synopsis
Seventeen year old Katelyn Richards is a stronger person than anyone will ever know, and that is just the way she wants it. Behind her normal facade lies the reality of a broken home life. Thanks to her abusive mother, a string of deadbeat stepfathers, and an unsympathetic system, Katelyn has learned that the only one she can count on is herself. Her life’s mission has become to shield her nine year old brother, Kevin, and to give him the future that they both wish for. A life with no more abuse, no worries about where their next meal will come from, and no more wondering if they will have a roof over their heads.
When her mother moves them again, this time to a small town in Montana, Katelyn’s resolve is shaken when she meets Max, a cute boy from her new school, who gets a glimpse into her real world. Max slowly manages to break through Katelyn’s wall of distrust, stirring up feelings she never saw coming. Now with her world more complicated than she ever intended, Katelyn struggles with the decision to follow her heart into the arms of the first boy she has ever loved. A decision that could risk the promise she made to protect Kevin, and to give them the ‘someday soon’ that is so close within their grasp.

My Review

Katelyn and Kevin live a hard life. A life of darkness, sadness and fear. Their mother is abusive, changes boyfriends like a person changes clothes and moves her family any time it suits her fancy. They don't know when they will get their next meal or where they will sleep, but one thing that Katelyn and Kevin can count on is each other. With the promise of 'someday soon,' Katelyn and Kevin lean on each other to get through life.

Katelyn will do anything to keep the attention and anger of her mother off her younger brother Kevin, even if it means getting knocked around. Being the target of her mother's rants and fists, Katelyn has learned to hide her pain and the darkness that is her life. But when they find themselves in a small town in Montana, Katelyn realizes that keeping people from the truth might be harder than she ever imagined.

In a small town everyone knows everyone, and everyone knows everything. There are no secrets. And when the new family moves in the town is quick to welcome them to the fold and Max is eager to make Katelyn his girlfriend. But Katelyn is determined to keep the town from her secrets and Max at arms length because nothing can be this good. No one can be that accepting, and no one can be in heart except for Kevin.

But things unravel fast and Katelyn and Kevin struggle to keep their shields up, their secrets hidden and hearts shut. As Max and the other town folk make their way in Katelyn and Kevin have to make some hard choices that might put their 'someday soon' in jeopardy.

Wishing for Someday Soon is an incredible story of perseverance, hope and survival. In a world where most would crumble Katelyn has grown stronger becoming a beacon of hope and love for her brother. Katelyn is scared to trust her new friends and even more scared to let them in. Every time she makes a step towards happiness, reality is there to slap her in the face and remind her of the life she thinks she is meant to live.

In Wishing for Someday Soon we get a bleak look at what life is like for many children in our country and it is that reality that makes this story so incredibly heart breaking. This story will have you crying silent tears your heart breaks from despair and burns with hope for Katelyn and Kevin.

But underneath all the raw emotion and pain lies hope. Hope that life will get better for Katelyn and Kevin, hope that they will get their 'someday soon.' But that hope is not always obvious and things are definitely rocky. Tiffany King will definitely keep your heart in a vice as you read Wishing for Someday Soon waiting to see if that gift will ever be granted.

Everything about this story is incredible. Tiffany King does such an amazing job developing her characters, making their stories feel like reality. Wishing for Someday Soon is so real, that their pain, sorrow, and happiness becomes your pain, sorrow and happiness. Affirming your attachment and connection with the characters in the story. This story will leave you in shocked silence as the weight of the story sinks in. When you read it, and you really should, make sure you have tissues handy, because tears are definitely going to fall.

'"Yummy? You think I look yummy?" he asked suggestively, placing a warm hand on my knee.' (kindle loc. 1900).

I chose this moment because it is one of the tender moments that allows the hope to shine through.
